Sometimes You Just Need to Get Out of the House
Y’all, I haven’t left my house since Sunday when I took the baby home and ran a few errands. Monday? Home. Tuesday? Home. Wednesday? Home.
And honestly, I can stay home like nobody’s business. 😂
But today I had plans to go into town, run a few errands, and have lunch with a girlfriend I haven’t seen in a while.
Y’all, I LOVE this girl.
I haven’t even known her that long—maybe a year, year and a half—but she is truly one of those people where you meet and think, where have you been my whole life?
Our brains work almost exactly the same. Except she’s nicer than me. 😂 She really is. She’s calmer, more chill, and just GOOD PEOPLE. We can talk about anything, bounce ideas off each other, and somehow three hours can go by and it feels like one.
But first, I had to actually GET THERE.
And if you know me, you know how this goes.
Ask me to do something two weeks from now? Absolutely! Sounds fabulous! Can’t wait!
Three days before? I’m picking out an outfit and getting excited.
The morning of?
I’m looking for an escape route. 😂
Suddenly I’m tired. Suddenly staying home sounds wonderful. Suddenly I’m wondering why anybody needs friends or lunch or errands or civilization at all.
I will try to talk myself out of going right up until the minute I walk out the door.
And almost every single time, once I actually get dressed, get in the car, survive Houston traffic and GET THERE, I’m so happy I went.
I really do love getting out of the house. I just hate everything getting out of the house requires.
I hate schedules. I hate having to be somewhere at a certain time. And I REALLY hate driving.
Houston freeways are a whole other issue. You can be cruising down I-10 or 610 at 70 miles an hour and suddenly everybody slams on their brakes and you’re apparently supposed to know that your lane has disappeared and you needed to be three lanes over ten seconds ago.
It’s exhausting. 😂
Anyway, I survived and met my girlfriend at this little Persian restaurant in the Heights.
And I’m not going to tell y’all where because she picked it and I love her.
But I will tell you this:
I will not be going back. 😂
She doesn’t know I didn’t like it, so nobody tell her.
But the food didn’t even matter because we sat there from noon until almost 3:00 talking about EVERYTHING.
And driving home, I started thinking about how different friendship feels to me now.
There was a time in my life when I could sit with friends for hours and so much of the conversation revolved around negativity. Exes. Ex-husbands. Drama. Who did what. Who said what. Who hurt who. Just constantly recycling all the bad stuff happening in our lives.
And I don’t want that anymore.
That doesn’t mean my friends and I don’t talk about our problems. Of course we do. We talk about our kids, marriages, work, things we’re struggling with, decisions we’re trying to make and all the normal stuff life throws at us.
But there’s a difference between talking through life with someone and sitting around feeding negativity.
Today felt different.
We talked about life. We talked about ideas. We encouraged each other. We laughed. We talked about things we want to do and things we might want to change. There was no gossiping about other people. No tearing anybody down. No sitting there making ourselves miserable over somebody else.
And when I left, I felt BETTER than I did when I walked in.
Y’all, those are the people you need.
The friends who fill your cup instead of draining it.
The ones who can listen when you’re struggling but don’t leave you feeling more hopeless than you did before.
The ones who support you, encourage you, tell you the truth and somehow make you walk away thinking, OK… I can do this.
She is a girl’s girl, and I love that about her.
And I realized today that I need more days like this.
June through September is usually my slow season, so I can go days without having any real reason to leave my house. And quite frankly, leaving my house is expensive. 😂
I don’t know how it happens.
I can leave to pick up dry cleaning and somehow money starts flying out of my pocket.
Walgreens? $100.
One little errand? $200.
God forbid I accidentally wander into Neiman Marcus.
So staying home is definitely financially responsible. 😂
But sometimes you need to put on real clothes, get out of your house, sit across from somebody you love and TALK.
It really is good for the soul.
And my day actually got even better.
I’ve been stressed lately about finding a jeweler here locally.
My guys in New York are wonderful. I LOVE them. They’re incredibly good to me, they do beautiful work, and they genuinely want to see my jewelry business grow. They give me specials that I can offer y’all, they’ve made engagement rings for me, and they’ve helped me tremendously.
But New York is still New York.
Sometimes when I’m having something custom made, I want to SEE it. I want to touch it. I want to be involved in the process. And y’all know me—I want to be able to drive over there and aggravate somebody in person. 😂
Well, my girlfriend connected me with a local jeweler, and I had an appointment with him this afternoon.
Y’ALL.
I am obsessed with him.
He is literally about 20 minutes from my house, and I am SO excited about what this could mean for some of the custom pieces I want to start doing.
And I had this little moment driving home where I thought about how funny life is.
A year and a half ago, I walked into my first jewelry show and didn’t know SHIT.
Nothing.
I was completely clueless.
Then I went to the next show and suddenly I had people helping me. I met incredible people. My guys in New York took me under their wing. One person introduced me to another person, who introduced me to somebody else, and now today I’m sitting with another jeweler practically in my backyard who may be exactly what I need for this next little chapter.
Sometimes I think God puts things in your path before you even realize why you need them.
And I just think that’s pretty cool.
So I came home feeling GOOD.
Great lunch with a friend. Excited about jewelry. Productive day. Feeling grateful.
And then I walked in the house.
Welton is sick.
Y’all.
Apparently this may be the end. 😂
According to him, he may not be able to get out of bed for DAYS.
DAYS, Y’ALL.
I cannot.
If somebody would like to come get him for the weekend, please message me privately because I’m not sure I have the qualifications necessary to care for someone this gravely ill. 😂
Thankfully, tomorrow morning I’m getting my hair done and then I have to run over to Westheimer to my alterations and do a few other things.
Unfortunately, Welton being sick also means one very tragic thing for me:
I have to be my own driver again.
Please keep ME in your thoughts during this difficult time. 😂
So now it’s about 11:30, I’m going to watch my trash TV—probably some Housewives—go to bed and hopefully wake up tomorrow ready to have another productive day.
Today was good.
Nothing huge happened. Nothing earth-shattering.
I just got out of my house. I spent time with someone who makes me feel good. I got excited about my business. I laughed. I talked. I made a new connection.
And maybe that’s the whole point.
Sometimes the days that fill you back up aren’t the big days.
Sometimes you just need to get dressed, get out the door and spend a few hours with somebody who’s good for your soul.
Now y’all have a good night.
And PLEASE tell your friends to come read my blog because today’s numbers are hurting my feelings. 😂
Love y’all. ❤️
