“Some Thoughts Belong in Your Head, Not My Comment Section.” 😂
Y’all, I’m just going to go ahead and tell you right now: this was not the blog I planned on writing tonight.
There is something else I really, really want to write about, but today is not the day. I need to cool down first, because sometimes you need to wait until you can tell the story without setting the whole damn internet on fire. 😂
So we’ll revisit that one later.
Tonight, we’re talking about internet trolls, keyboard warriors, and people who have never met you but somehow feel completely qualified to evaluate your life.
Y’all know I am 100% IN on this social media journey. And when I decided to do this, I knew exactly what I was signing up for.
I knew there would be scrutiny.
I knew there would be people talking shit.
I knew there would be naysayers, doubters and haters.
And I especially knew I wasn’t coming into this pretending to be one of those women living in a $20 million house with 25 Birkins lined up perfectly behind her while she casually tells you about her morning skincare routine.
That ain’t me.
You’re getting ME.
My house. My family. My clothes. My opinions. My mistakes. My temper. My grandbabies. My husband. My ridiculous stories. And apparently, occasionally, a public water fountain in Italy. 😂
For the most part, I have pretty thick skin. I can take a lot.
But when I’ve had enough?
I HAVE HAD ENOUGH.
And today was not my best day.
My morning was actually good. My afternoon turned to complete shit, and once I get in a mood, everybody who knows me knows the safest thing to do is probably just stay out of my way.
Welton has a saying:
“Don’t poke the bear.”
And unfortunately, I am the bear. 😂
Now, I know that’s something I need to work on. I should control my temper better. I should let things roll off my back. And honestly, most of the time I do.
Facebook has always been my safe little place. Over the years, I’ve blocked and deleted most of the bullshit, so my private Facebook feels like family to me. Some of y’all I’ve never even met, but you’re so damn nice to me. When I run into y’all out somewhere, you’ll tell me, “Oh my God, you’re so funny! I love following you!”
And I LOVE that.
But now that I’ve opened myself up on Instagram, TikTok, my public Facebook and everywhere else, I’ve basically opened the front door and invited the entire internet to have an opinion.
And apparently some people cannot resist the invitation. 😂
Most people are wonderful.
Then every once in a while…
HERE COMES A TROLL.
Today I posted a video from Italy, and a woman commented that Jake should have tried the water before letting his daughter drink it.
Now, was that the meanest comment anybody has ever written?
No.
Was it even that big of a deal?
NO!
And that’s EXACTLY why it irritated the absolute shit out of me.
I’m sitting there thinking:
WHO ARE YOU?! 😂
You watched a tiny clip of our lives and somehow decided you needed to evaluate his parenting based on a WATER FOUNTAIN.
A WATER FOUNTAIN.
For God’s sake, people have been drinking out of water fountains since the beginning of time.
And here’s another little detail:
How do you know he didn’t drink out of it first?
How do you know I didn’t?
How do you know everybody standing there hadn’t already tried it?
YOU DON’T.
Because you weren’t there.
You saw a few seconds of a video on the internet.
And that’s the part of social media I will never understand.
If you’re scrolling and you see something you don’t like…
WHY CAN’T YOU JUST KEEP SCROLLING?
Why does every thought have to become a comment?
I see things every single day that I think are stupid. I see clothes I wouldn’t wear, houses I wouldn’t decorate that way, parenting decisions I wouldn’t make, food I wouldn’t eat and opinions I completely disagree with.
Do you know what I do?
I KEEP SCROLLING.
Because I don’t know those people.
They didn’t ask me.
And my opinion is not so damn important that a stranger needs to hear it.
And I’m going to confess something else.
When somebody leaves me a dumbass comment, do I go look at their profile?
ABSOLUTELY I DO. 😂
Don’t lie. Y’all do it too.
And half the time there’s no profile picture. Or it’s a cat. Or a flower. Or something completely random.
And sometimes you start scrolling and their entire page is inspirational quotes, Bible verses, posts about kindness and treating people with grace…
Meanwhile, five minutes ago they were on a stranger’s page being an asshole.
And I’m sitting there thinking:
Well, this is awkward. 😂
Here’s the thing.
If somebody tells me my hair is ugly, my outfit is ugly, my house is ugly or they don’t like me, whatever. Fine.
You don’t have to like me.
There are billions of people on this planet. I’m sure plenty of them would find me annoying as hell.
But don’t watch ten seconds of somebody’s life and decide you suddenly know everything about them, their family or how they parent.
You don’t.
Social media gives us access to people.
It does not give us authority over them.
And maybe that’s what I needed to remind myself of tonight too.
Because if I’m going to keep putting my life on the internet—and I am—I’m going to have to accept that every once in a while somebody is going to poke the bear.
I’m working on not biting their damn hand off when they do. 😂
But I’m a work in progress, y’all.
So tonight’s public service announcement is very simple:
Not every thought in your head needs to become a comment on somebody else’s life.
Sometimes you can just think it.
Sometimes you can disagree.
Sometimes you can roll your eyes.
And sometimes…
you can just keep your damn trap shut and KEEP SCROLLING. 😂
As for what I really wanted to write about tonight?
Oh, we’re going to get there.
Just not today.
