Sometimes Doing Absolutely Nothing Is Exactly What You Need

Y’all, I almost didn’t write a blog today.

I don’t even know why. I’ve been on such a roll making sure I write something every single day, and then today I realized I hadn’t written a damn thing. So here we are.

And honestly? Today wasn’t exciting. Nothing major happened. There was no big adventure, no fabulous lunch, no shopping spree, no major life event.

And it was a fabulous day.

Normally Fridays are my errand days. Welton works from home on Fridays, and after he finishes working, he usually takes me around to do everything I’ve put off all week.

Why?

Because y’all know I HATE TO DRIVE.

And when I say hate, I mean hate.

Little backstory because, of course, I have one.

I’ve been driving since I got my license. Actually, that’s a lie. I was driving before I got my license because when I was a kid I used to sneak out in my grandmother’s car.

Kids, please don’t do that.

It was a terrible idea.

And just so nobody is picturing teenage Tammy cruising around town in some fabulous little sports car, let me clear that up right now.

My grandmother drove an Oldsmobile Delta 88.

So no, y’all. I was not sneaking out in style. 😂

Anyway, I drove my entire life until we moved to Asia. When we moved there, Welton’s company provided us with a car and a driver, so for more than three years I basically did not drive at all.

When we came home to visit, we only had Welton’s car because I had gotten rid of mine when we moved overseas. Most of the time he drove anyway. Occasionally, if he had to go into the Houston office, I’d drop him off and take the car, but for the most part?

I got very, very accustomed to somebody else driving me around.

And apparently there was no going back. 😂

Now I cannot stand driving, especially in traffic.

I applaud every single one of y’all who gets up every morning and drives from Katy, The Woodlands, Conroe, Sugar Land or anywhere else into Houston for work.

I do not know how y’all do it.

The few times I’ve had to sit in that traffic, I have questioned every decision I’ve ever made that led me to being on that freeway.

I hate it.

Now, I’ll drive around Katy. I’ll go to H-E-B, the cleaners, the post office, or run little errands close to home. And obviously if I have a doctor’s appointment, hair appointment or something I absolutely have to do, I drive.

Do I like it?

No.

But I do it.

However, if something can wait until Friday when Welton can drive me?

That shit is waiting until Friday.

Welton is always saying to me, “Can’t you do some of this stuff during the week while I’m at work?”

Well, technically, yes.

Do I want to?

No. 😂

And the funny thing is, when my mom was alive, I used to drive into town all the time and drive her everywhere. Apparently I had no problem driving when my mama needed to go somewhere.

But y’all, let’s be very clear about something.

My mother could not drive.

And I’m not just talking about after she got Parkinson’s. Obviously that made things worse.

That woman could not drive BEFORE she had Parkinson’s.

She was one of the worst drivers in the whole damn world. 😂

I will never forget one time after she had Parkinson’s. It wasn’t as bad yet as it eventually became, but it was bad enough that she would sometimes get discombobulated. One day she got turned around while she was driving, ended up getting pulled over by the police, and Wayne had to go pick her up.

Well, sometime after that, I went down to Corpus to visit her and Wayne. Mom wanted to go run some errands, and Wayne told her she wasn’t driving.

Y’all.

She was so mad.

She could not understand why nobody wanted her to drive anymore, and she was complaining to me about it.

Finally I looked at her and said, “Mom, I don’t know what you’re so mad about. You couldn’t drive BEFORE you had Parkinson’s. Now it’s just worse.”

And she laughed.

I will never forget that day as long as I live because she truly could not understand why nobody wanted her behind the wheel, and I’m thinking, Mama, Parkinson’s isn’t even the whole problem here. You couldn’t drive before anyway. 😂

So basically, for years I was Driving Miss Daisy.

And somehow, somewhere along the way, I became Miss Daisy.

Poor Welton.

Karma really is a bitch. 😂

Which brings us back to today.

I fully intended to run all of my errands.

I knew I had some friends coming over this morning to buy some jewelry — and by the way, THANK YOU. Y’all know who you are.

I am genuinely so thankful for how supportive everyone has been of my little jewelry business. Every purchase, every referral, every person who sends somebody my way — I appreciate all of it more than y’all know.

After everybody left, it was probably 12:30 or 1:00, maybe 1:30, and I looked at Welton and said,

“You know what? I don’t feel like doing anything today. I just want to cook some food.”

He reminded me that I hadn’t laid anything out to thaw.

Well, no problem.

I have this nifty little pan that I seriously need to show y’all and do a review on. You put frozen meat on this thing and I swear it thaws it in no time. I love it. One of those random little things you buy and then wonder why everybody doesn’t own one.

So we pulled out the magic thawing pan, went digging through the freezer, found some meat, and I cooked.

Nothing fancy.

Nothing Instagram-worthy.

Just food.

I even made brownies.

And then we sat our asses on the couch and watched TV ALL DAY.

We had to catch up on Silo, then we started the new Reacher, which I LOVE, and we watched something else that I cannot remember the name of to save my life.

And somewhere around 12:30 that night I told Welton, “I am so tired.”

He said, “So am I.”

And we went to bed.

That was our Friday.

And you know what?

It was fabulous.

I did a few little things around the house, but nothing major. I didn’t accomplish half of what I thought I was going to accomplish, and yes, there’s a tiny part of me that feels guilty because now all those Friday errands have become Saturday errands.

But that’s okay.

Sometimes you need a day where you don’t do a damn thing.

Tomorrow, though, we’re back in business.

And I think I’m finally going to cave and buy the Skylight Calendar.

I KNOW.

I’ve resisted this thing forever.

I am still an old-school calendar person. I have a regular calendar that sits on my bar, and every year I buy a new one. I write EVERYTHING in it.

I also put notes in my phone because if I don’t write something down somewhere, I promise you it is leaving my brain forever.

Welton has been telling me for probably six months that I need a Skylight Calendar, and for some reason I’ve refused.

Which is actually strange because normally if somebody shows me a new gadget, some cool little electronic thing or anything remotely groovy, I’m buying the damn thing.

But this one?

I wouldn’t cave.

And the funny thing is, I already own TWO Skylights — just the photo frames. One has pictures of the grandkids, and the other has pictures of Welton and me from all of our vacations and travels. The kids gave me the one with the grandkids on it, and I love it.

So after another conversation with my husband about how badly I apparently need this calendar, I think tomorrow is the day.

I’m going to Best Buy and getting the 15-inch one.

A while back I bought this Best Buy membership thing where I paid around $30 and now I get 60 days to return certain things. I originally did it because I bought a camera and wasn’t sure I was going to keep it.

Speaking of that camera…

We still haven’t completely figured out how to use the damn thing.

But I have 60 days, so we’re fine. 😂

That’s also why I want to buy the Skylight at Best Buy instead of ordering it online for a discount. I want to be able to get it home, put it where I think I want it and actually live with it for a little while.

I’m starting with the 15-inch. If I get it home and decide it’s too small, back it goes and I’ll get the 27-inch.

Tomorrow I also need to go pick up some jackets, possibly get my hair done if I can somehow get an appointment because my hair is DISGUSTING, and knowing Welton and me, we’ll probably end up eating somewhere while we’re out.

Actually, who am I kidding?

If we go into town, we’re eating. 😂

I also want to stop at Saks because there’s a purse I want to look at in person. I have one here that I want to compare with the one at Saks so I can look at all the little details side by side.

That probably makes absolutely no sense to y’all.

But it makes perfect sense to me, and that’s really all that matters.

I’ve also got a whole bunch of new social media stuff going on behind the scenes right now, and I’m really excited about it. It’s going to take about a month for everything to get done, which I wish wasn’t the case because y’all know patience is not exactly one of my strongest qualities.

But it’s moving in the right direction.

It’s going to work out.

And I’m okay with that.

Yesterday, my friend/bookkeeper Cristy came over and got my jewelry spreadsheet organized, and Y’ALL.

I AM SO EXCITED.

I finally feel like I have everything in one place. Now I just need to go through it, mark what’s sold, put in what each piece sold for, and then we’ll be able to see exactly what I’m making — or, God forbid, what I’m losing. 😂

That’s a project for next week.

I have some other things I need to get done around the house on Sunday, and they’ll get done too.

But today?

Today I didn’t need to conquer the world.

I cooked some food.

I made brownies.

I watched TV with my husband.

I stayed home.

And I had a really, really good day.

Sometimes I think we get so caught up in feeling like every day needs to be productive that we forget a day doesn’t have to accomplish anything to still be a good day.

And today was a good day.

As for the little bit of drama that happened the other day…

I’m still not ready to talk about it.

I’m going to talk about it.

Y’all know me well enough to know that. 😂

But I’m not ready yet.

And maybe that’s another thing I’m learning: just because I can say something doesn’t mean I have to say it immediately.

So for tonight, that’s all I’ve got.

No drama. No major revelations. No fabulous story.

Just a Friday at home with Welton, some home-cooked food, brownies and way too much television.

And sometimes?

That’s more than enough.
